Stand-up for your health

 

  No .1 Middle school

The general idea of this period

The reading passage introduces us a very popular form of comedy in the west. It is made up of three sections--- type of stand-up; a famous comedian; the fact that laughter is good for your health Students are expected to gain some knowledge about stand-up comedy and reinforce their reading comprehension.

 

Teaching aims:

(1) Encourage the Ss to grasp the main topics of the three sections---types of stand-up, a famous comedian and the fact that laughter is good for your health.

(2) Stimulate the Ss’ interest in learning English by talking about their own opinions

when it comes to the topic “Laughter is the best medicine”.

(3) Develop the students’ reading ability---how to guess the meanings of new words.

 

Teaching Important points & difficult points:

(1)   Find the main points in the three sections and express them.

(2)   Understanding the text.

 

Teaching methods:

Teachers-class,individuals,pais

 

Teaching aids:

The multimedia, the blackboard

 

Teaching Procedure:

Step 1 Lead-in

Greeting : Good moring, boys and girls!

Talk about well-known forms of comedy---farce,sketch,crosstalk,circus.

Show some pictures about famous comedians and discuss with the students.

 

Step 2: Fast-reading for general idea.

(1) Go through the passage as quickly as possible and find answers to the three questions in Part A.

1 What is the article about?

2 How many types of stand-up are there?

3 What is laughter good for?

(2) Give the structure of the whole passage:

1.      Types of stand-up Four types

2.      A famous comedian Billy Crystal

3.      Laughter is good for health!

 

Step 3: Careful-reading for detailed information

let's listen to the tape and read the passage again more carefully and try to finish part C1 after your listening.

Detailed information:

C1: Answer the following questions.

1.What is special about stand-up comedy?

2.What are the four main types of stand-up?

3.When did Billy Crystal begin practising stand-up?

4.What is one reason Billy Crystal has become so famous?

5. How many times has Billy Crystal hosted the Academy Awards?

6. Who were Bob Hope and George Burns?

7. What does your brain do when you laugh?

8. What is the English idiom about laughter mentioned in the text?

 

C2: (1)Choose the correct type of stand-up comedy.

1.Observational

a. A comedian stands on stage and holds a banana to his ear. He says, ‘Hello? Hello? I’m sorry I can’t hear you. Something must be wrong with my phone.’

2.Prop

b. A comedian puts on glasses, changes his or her voice and pretends to be someone else.

3.Physical

c. A comedian walks on stage. As she introduces herself, she falls down.

4.Impressionist

d. A comedian says, ‘My Grandmother started walking 1 km a day when she turned 60. She’s 89 now, and don’t know where she is!’

(2) Will you create similar situations to perform the four types of stand-up comedy?

 

Step 4 Reading Strategy

What if we come across some new terms / words while reading?

Guess the meaning

1. Read the sentences before and after the one containing the new word

2. Look at the words around an unknown word

 

Step 5 Consolidation and Expansion (Choose one of the following.)

F(p5)  Discuss the questions:

1. What kind of comedy do you enjoy the most? Why?

2. Laughter is good for you and for everyone else. How do you make other people laugh?

3. Tell a funny story to your classmates.

Step 6 Homework

1.       Write a funny story and next time show it to the class.

2.       Read the text till you can read it fluently

3.       Do part E on page5.

如何处理牛津高中英语每个单元的板快的教学?这是我最近深感困惑的一个问题.它离系统的语言知识教学相距甚远,与高考试题也很难挂钩,而且这部分内容找不到几个值得讲解的考点,老师教起来觉得是浪费时间,学生学起来觉得没什么成就感.另外,我认为模块的操作领先,牛津教材全部都用英语编写,包括教材的主干部分和所有文字说明,因此板快不可避免遇到生词.其次,技能从不同角度体现了英语教学着重培养学生的,,,”,真可谓是对学生综合能力培养的教学,难度大,不容易把握;其三,该部分所选材料覆盖日常生活.无论老师还是学生自身知识储备要有所保证,否则也知识就书论书,讲不透,学不懂.如我们学NOTICE,由于本人对NOTICE知之甚少,因此在知道学生制作NOTICE.只能搬用教科书一些内容,学生多少会有吃不饱的感觉.还有,因为学生自身储备不足,有时候有可能用汉语交流,达不到培养学生综合运用英语的目的.

因此,在教学过程中,我觉得要注意处理好下面几个问题:

1.       重视语言的知识学习

语言习得理论认为足够的输入是语言输出的条件,任务强调用语言做事,因此做事前的准备最重要的,有足够的语言输入才有做事的基础,”的关系是:学是前提,做是基础.学是为了做,做有是为了学.老师要不断扩大学生的知识面,不能局限于书本的内容,而忽略了学生个人能力的训练

2.       重视每个学生的参与.

老师要有的学生关,重视每个学生的发展,注意不能是任务最终落在少数几个英语尖子生为关注对象.在每个环节上充分考虑不同学生的需求,尊重他们的个体差异,通过小范围树立学生的自信心,形成克服困难的意志,愿意主动向他人求救,或想书本求救,是能力较差的学生发挥水平.

3.       重视教学个个环节的时间分配.

老师在备课时要紧扣教材内容,仔细分析文章结构对每节课进行科学,系统的时间分配.不要过多的渲染某个环节,要主次分明.对时间分配的合理,也是教学过程当中最为重要的一个方面,让学生在既不累的情况下迅速掌握本节课的重难点.
